We're now Carbon Neutral!

As part of our sustainability goals, we're proud to announce that Mission Critical Software is now Carbon-neutral!

You should be skeptical of any announcement like this, because there is plenty of corporate "greenwashing" out there. Since our intent is to hold ourselves to high sustainability standards, we'd like to give you some background about our efforts that led to this announcement.

Calculating our Carbon Footprint

The first step in this process has been to calculate our Carbon footprint. The gold standard for calculating corporate Carbon footprints is the "Scope 3" methodology, and that is the methodology that we've used. A lower standard, which is used by many other companies, only takes into account the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions directly emitted by the company (factories, automobiles, etc.). The Scope 3 methodology, on the other hand, is a more comprehensive approach that also includes:
- Emissions from our suppliers while providing products/services to our company
- Emissions from our customers while using the products/services that we provide to them

So, as part of our carbon footprint, we've included:
- the emissions involved in creating the products we buy (such as digital devices and vehicles), spread out over their useful lifetimes
- the ongoing emissions involved in products/services we've purchased and leased (including office space, and cloud-based services)
- the emissions involved in creating the products that our customers will need to buy because of software we create, spread out over their useful lifetimes
- the emissions involved in powering those digital devices to run the software that we create

Reducing our Carbon Footprint

We recognize that the best way to reduce our carbon footprint is through our own actions, in conjunction with our suppliers and customers.

We are pleased to say that our main cloud-based suppliers (Amazon and MIcrosoft) have already reached carbon-neutrality on the services they provide to us.

The biggest change we can make is to extend the lifetime of the physical assets we've purchased. We're now planning to extend the lifetime of those assets by at least a year. And we plan to convert existing hybrid vehicles to an plug-in hybrids when their extended lifetime is complete.

Offsetting our Remaining Carbon Footprint

We recognize the controversy behind the effectiveness of carbon offset programs, and we are committed to funding carbon offsets with quantifiable and verifiable results. Our goal is to partner with long-term carbon removal and sequestration projects.

After researching available options against our goals, we have decided to partner with TerraPass (www.terrapass.com) for our Carbon offset needs. TerraPass is organized as a Social Enterprise, and has the most transparent program we've seen for validating the claims of carbon offset projects. We'll continue to evaluate options on an ongoing basis.
